Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

Sony Ericsson launched the Xperia X10 last year with Android 1.6 Doughnut. What a pity, thankfully their update to Android 2.1 Eclair came out shortly after. And if it wasn’t for the protest from Xperia X10 fans, there would not be a Gingerbread update either this year. The update is not out yet but should be coming in the next few days.

Here’s what the update for the Xperia X10 to Android 2.3 Gingerbread will include,

– Facebook integration with Android
– Wi-Fi mobile hotspot functionality
– Tethering functionality.

The update will not work OTA for now. Users are requested to update via their computers using the PC Companion software. Since the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is a global phone, it is hard to estimate when the update will be available as it depends on the wireless carrier and country you live in.

The update to Gingerbread will remove a few features, for example the Backup/Restore app as well as Mediascape. Just as a safety precaution, make sure you save all your data before updating, you never know what can happen.
