Sony Ericsson Xperia Play available on Optus and Telstra in Australia

The Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson finally made its way to Australia. It was reported that the famous Playstation phone was scheduled to launch starting June 8 on both Telstra and Optus. However, the device has been available since June 3rd on Telstra and is also currently available on Optus.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play features a 4-inch touchscreen underneath which you’ll find a slide out keypad similar to a gamepad. This gaming device runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is the first device to be PlayStation Certified meaning that it can play PlayStation Suite games.
It will come pre-installed with six games: Star Battalion, FIFA 10, Madden NFL 11, SIMS 3, Bruce Lee and Crash Bandicoot.

Telstra is offering the Xperia Play for $20 per month on its $79 Freedom Connect Plan for 24 months. This plan includes $800 worth of calls and 2GB of data. If contracts are not for you, you can purchase Sony Ericsson Xperia Play from Telstra for $960 (USD $1030). That’s a lot of money, especially when you can get it from the US for $599 USD.

Regardless, if you prefer Optus, the Australian wireless carrier also offer the Xperia Play. For the $79 Optus Cap plan, you’ll get the device free of charge. The plan includes $900 worth of calls and 3GB of data.

The Xperia Play can’t compare yet to the Playstation PSP, but it sure can bring gaming devices on smartphones to a whole new level.
