Archos introducing an Android tablet for the whole family, the FamilyPad

Archos is preparing to introduce just in time for Christmas, its latest Android tablet – the FamilyPad. Like its name implies, the FamilyPad is aimed at families, and with its oversized 13.3 inch touchscreen, Archos is hoping to reunite the family around the tablet.

The FamilyPad will be running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Hopefully Archos will plan an update to the latest Android OS 4.2 Jelly Bean as this last iteration of Android supports multi-user accounts just like the one available on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. The Archos tablet features a 13.3 inch 10-point multitouch display screen with a 1280×800 resolution. Powered by a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor with 1GB of RAM, the FamilyPad also comes with 8GB of data storage expandable via a micro SDHC slot that supports cards up to 32GB.

The Archos tablet also includes a 2 megapixel camera in the front and the back of the tablet. In terms of connectivity, the FamilyPad comes with Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 port and HDMI output so that you can connect it to your big screen TV.
The FamilyPad is not a powerful tablet, but it will definitely do the job as a family pad. The only problem is that because of its big screen, the tablet is also heavy with a weight of 1.3Kg, the FamilyPad is not really portable. Regardless, the idea seems good, its just that there could be room for improvement in terms of OS and design, but hey, we’re never happy aren’t we?

The Archos FamilyPad will initially only be available in the UK with a later release in Europe. It will be available for £274.99 or around $450 in the UK. Archos did not mention a North American release.
